How to Stop Overthinking
Everyone has experienced the uncontrollable spiral of overthinking. Whether it be worrying about a big exam coming up or remembering an embarrassing moment from middle school, we've all fallen down the rabbit hole once or twice. Here are a few tips to stop yourself from falling:
Write everything down: Letting all your thoughts pour out, no matter how big or small, onto a sheet of paper is a great way to anchor yourself during an overthinking spell. Whether it be written out in a journal or scribbled quickly on a sticky note, you'll feel lighter and more focused after you create an outlet for your spiraling mind.
Get distracted: One of the best ways to get your mind off of something is to give it something else to think about. Doing an activity that requires your focus or brings you joy will help distract you from whatever is plaguing your thoughts.
Focus on what you can control: Overthinking is often driven by the things we can't control, which can leave us feeling overwhelmed and powerless. Shifting your focus to what you are able to control is a great way to reclaim your power.
Seek support: Share your thoughts and stressors with a friend, family member, or therapist. Getting help from someone outside our heads can give us a fresh perspective on things.
